Earlier this week, South African police arrested a man at the Lebombo port, as he was crossing from Mozambique into South Africa.
According to Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation spokesperson, Captain Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi, the vehicle, a white Volkswagen minibus, was stopped and searched. “During the search, counterfeit goods – sneakers, clothes and cosmetics with an estimated street value of R800,000 transported from Mozambique into the Republic of South Africa without valid permit, were seized,” she said.
The seized items included the aforementioned goods as well the van in which they were tranported were taken to the SAPS 13 register at SAPS Komatipoort Customs warehouse. The driver of the van was taken into custody and charged with “contravening the provisions of Section 83 (a) and (b) of the Customs and Excise Act.”
A second van pulling a trailer was also stopped; a subsequent search uncovered counterfeit sneakers and clothes worth an estimated R500,000. Sekgotodi said these seized items were also taken to the Komatipoort Customs warehouse.
A 34-year-old suspect was arrested and also charged contravening provisions of Section 83 (a) and (b) of the Customs and Excise Act.
